ABSTRACT
Vacuum plasma spraying (VPS) has rapidly established a leading position in the field of thermal spraying due to advancements in process conditions and the resulting improved coating properties.Practically all materials available as powder with a stable liquid phase can be used to produce VPS coatings.
A particular characteristic of the VPS technology is the possiblity to combine hard,high temperature,erosion and corrosion resistant materials with low melting material or those exhibiting a high oxygen affinity.Extremely interesting coatings can be fabricated by spraying blended powder or different materials mixed in the plasma flame.Both methods are described.
The potential of mixed-structure coatings and resulting coating properties are documented using examples of NiCoCrAlY with Al2O3 and Ti with TiB2.The results indicate that VPS coatings with composite properties can be optimised successfully and used in high technology systems under severe conditions.
