Mechanical Spalling
Improper coating design or improper application can also lead to mechanical spalling and subsequent coating failure.Common caused of mechanical spalling include :faulty substrate (tube) surface preparation;substrate contamination;thermal coefficient of expansion mismatch between coating and substrate;overheating of the coating during application;or spraying of excessively thick coatings.
Because spalling was identified as the major problem with thermal spay coatings for tube protection.it was categorized as a major factor to be dealt with in the program to develop a more successful coating.This became a prime consideration in selection of both coating materials and application techniques.
