Abstract: Conventional Metco 130 and nanostructured Al2O3-13% TiO2 feedstock powders were plasma sprayed and laser remelted to form Al2O3-13% TiO2 coatings on Ti-6Al-4V substrate. The microstructure of the coatings before and after laser remelting was investigated by scanning electron microscope ( SEM) . The microhardness of the coatings was evaluated by a Vickers microhardness tester. The results indicate that the lamellar structure of the plasma sprayed coatings is eliminated to form dense coatings after laser remelting. The bimodal microstructure feature of the as-sprayed coatings is retained in the laser-remelted nanostructured coatings. With the decrease of the scanning speed, the density of the coating surface is increased. The hardness of the laser-remelted nanostructured coatings is between 1150 HV 0. 3 and 1750 HV 0. 3,with an increase of 60% compared with that of the as-sprayed coatings.
