Abstract The current research situation and trend of abradable seal coatings and thermal barrier coatings are described in this paper. The development generalities of both coatings are discussed in detail. A novel multifunctional coating is presented and widely applied to gas turbine and aeronautical engine components to improve their high temperature thermal resistance due to a reduction in the service temperature at the substrate surface,and the service lifetime through abrasion during operation. In this paper, the conception, microstructure, realization method, and properties of the novel high-temperature thermal resistant abradable seal coating are discussed. The developmental potentiality of the novel coating is given out.
