Thermal Spray Coatings for Biomaterials: An Overview

Abstract
The materials used for developing implants are called biomaterials. Biomaterials can be metals, ceramics, polymer, glasses. Commonly used biometals are Ti, Co or stainless steel. Surface modification is considered an economical method for improving corrosion resistance and bioactivity of these existing materials. Hydroxyapatite (HAP) coatings are used on these alloys to enhance the bone bonding ability, improve the biocompatibility and reduce the toxic effect of bioimplants on living organism. A...Moremong various methods of surface modification, thermal spraying especially plasma spraying process has been successfully used for the same. It has emerged as an increasingly desirable technique due to several special features associated with it. However, due to the inherent high temperature in the plasma, deleterious effects such as evaporation, phase alteration, residual stress, debonding, and gas release etc., commonly occur in these coatings. Due to these undesirable features of plasma spraying there is need to explore new techniques working at lower temperatures for coating biomaterials. Keeping in view of problems with plasma spraying, High Velocity Oxy-fuel (HVOF) spray process has been considered by some investigators for depositing biomaterials in the recent past. This paper presents a tutorial introduction, comprehensive history and review of research work done on the use of various thermal spray techniques used for coatings on biometals with special emphasis on HVOF spraying.
