abstract:Thermal sprayed coatings (TSCs) are currently used to reduce erosion–corrosion on a large number of components in various industries, including the energy conversion and utilization system. Thermal spraying is a popular surface modification technology; however, even using state of the art coating systems, it is not possible to achieve defect free thermal spray coatings. TSCs consist of oxides and voids originating from spraying process that are found at the splat boundaries, through which the coatings were mainly attacked. Once the corrosive reagents reach the substrate, it starts to degrade it. Coatings often are treated after spraying to establish final dimensions or to improve or change the coating microstructure, thus avoiding some or all of the shortcomings of sprayed coatings. This is the main reason for the density of the coatings, by thermal treatments, sealers and improvements in the spraying parameters. This paper reviews the different post treatment processes for thermal spray coatings and their performance capabilities.
