Abstract: Molybdenum coatings were prepared on aluminum alloy by electro-thermal explosion spray. Properties of the molybdenum coatings were studied by SEM,scratch tester, microhardness and surface roughness tests, and micro-wear test machine. The effects of process parameters on the coating qualities are analysed and the process parameters are optimized based on orthogonal experiments. The results show that the molybdenum coatings are uniform, continuous, compact and low porosity. Metallurgical bond is formed between the coatings and the substrate. Microhardness of the molybdenum coatings is 4. 9 times as that of the substrate, while the wear volume loss is only 11. 2% ,compare with that of the substrate, indicating the improvement of the aluminum alloy surface wear resistance. Among the process parameters, which affect the coating quality and binding strength, the distance of spray is critical, then is the times of spraying, the mild effect is observed for the spray voltage.
