Abrasive wear and microhardness of Cr3C2–NiCr coatings

Time:2022-03-22 10:28:55  From:  Author:

The average weight loss of the Cr3C2–NiCr coatings is summarized in Table 1. It can be found that the abrasive wear resistance of the coatings varied with the change of the spray conditions, from 22.4 to 34.9 mg. The wear performance of the coatings in terms of effect of spray conditions has been discussed based on the regression formula in the previous paper.

Spray conditions and test results

The correlation of coating hardness with abrasive wear was also examined. The mean microhardness (Hv0.3) of the coating varies from 535 to 891 Hv0.3 (Table 1). It can be found that the hardness of the coating was remarkably influenced by spray conditions. However, through comparison of microhardness and abrasive wear weight loss, it appears that there is no obvious correlation between microhardness and abrasive wear for the HVOF Cr3C2–NiCr coating. This result may imply that microhardness of HVOF cermet coating can not be effectively employed for predicating its abrasive wear performance.

Figs. 1 and 2 show the effects of carbide size and volume fraction on the abrasive wear weight loss, respectively (Table 1). It can be clearly found that the wear weight loss decreased with the increase of carbide volume fraction and the decrease of apparent carbide diameter. Therefore, carbide particles in the coating play a dominant role in determining coating wear performance.
