Fig. 1 shows a typical aspect of layered structure of the Fe-A1/WC composite coating. The structure as well as the physical and mechanics performance of the Fe-A1/WC composite coating have been reported in detail. Chemical analysis indicates the composition to be Fe-13.87A1-17.27C-3.35W-2.59 Ni-1.27Cr-18. 140 (mole fraction, ~).

The main phases in the Fe- A1/WC composite coatings are Fe3A1, FeA1, WC and a-Fe, together with fine A1203 layers. The very dark contrast corresponds to porosity and fine oxide layers(A1203), the deeper gray contrast corresponds to Fe~AI and FeA1, and the lighter gray to a-Fe, the white contrast corresponds to WC and W2C. The adhesion strength and the average microhardness of the coating are 25.7 MPa and HV0.1321.9, respectively. The porosity is approximately 2.13%.
