Sliding wear behavior of Fe–Al coatings and Fe–Al/WC composite coatings

Fig. 1 shows variations of friction coefficient of the Fe–Al coatings (Fig. 1a) and Fe–Al/WC composite coatings (Fig. 1b) as a function of sliding distance under a sliding speed of 0.8 ms1 and different normal loads of 3, 5 and 7N. All tests showed similar change of friction coefficient: a rise right after the start of the test followed by a slight fall and rise again to the steady-state for all the loads. From these results, we can learn that the friction coefficients of both coatings show little difference. And the friction coefficients of both coatings decrease slightly with increasing load.

Fig. 1. Effect of load on the friction coefficient vs. sliding distance: (a) Fe–Al coating and (b) Fe–Al/WC coating (v = 0.8ms1).

Fig. 2 shows the variation of wear rates of the Fe–Al and Fe–Al/WC composite coatings with normal loads. The wear rate of Fe–Al/WC composite coating is far lower than that of Fe–Al coating for all loads. And wear rate of both coatings increases with increasing load. It indicates that the coatings wear-resistance is obviously increased with adding WC hard particles.
