There has been a recent demand for multi-applicable coatings for enhancing system durability and functionality properties such as electrical conductivity and anticorrosion. In the case of diamond-like carbon coating (DLC) family, materials such as hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H), amorphous carbon (a-C), and tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) have been suggested for such applications. Such coatings afford enhanced performance properties such as low friction and high wear resistance. In the particular case of ta-C coating, whereas it is excellent for mechanical components, the high compressive stress tends to limit the practicable thickness.
