DLC coatings in water-lubricated conditions

Time:2020-05-12 20:19:01  From:  Author:

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings have low friction performance and high wear resistance in unlubricated and in dry atmospheres, which has been widely reported by several authors. However, the tribological properties of the coatings are influenced by the surrounding atmospheric conditions. For example, amorphous hydrogenated carbon coatings have extremely low friction coefficient values indry (0% RH) atmospheres, but the humidity distinctively increases the friction coefficient of a-C:H films. The performance of DLC coatings combined with lubricants is usually related to hard disc drive applications and only rarely the performance of DLC films been evaluated in oil or water-lubricated conditions in other applications. However, the usage of DLC coatings with water lubrication or with lubricants containing reduced amounts of additives might create the bases for new, environmentally more acceptable solutions compared to existing practices. Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings typically show low friction performance and high wear resistance. In order to evaluate how the presence of water changes the tribological performance of DLC coatings, different DLC coatings were evaluated by water-lubricated tribological tests. The different DLC coating types comprised both hydrogenated and hydrogen-free DLC films that were deposited using different techniques. The tribological tests were carried out by reciprocating sliding tests with a low sliding velocity (0.004 m/s). Alumina balls were used as the counterparts with a normal load of 5N.
