Abstract The research progress and application of preparing coating on substrate of materials by means of wire exploding spray coating (WESC) is reviewed in this paper. The characters of the WESC technology, the schematic diagram of the spray coating equipment, and the category of the spraying material are given in detail. The influences of the factors on the quality of the coating are discussed, such as the electrically discharging parameter, the geometrical dimension of the spraying material and the substrate, the pressure in the coating chamber, and the composite coatings.The industrial applications of the WESC are listed. The further problems needed to be researched in the future are analyzed.
