Morphologies and XRD Analysis of Sprayed WC-12Co Powders

The grains constituting the sprayed powder were nominally spherical, 15-40 lm in diameter. Sample grains are shown in Fig. 1(a). The powder grains featured many surface microholes (Fig. 1b). The resulting HVOF-sprayed powder was composed of WC and Co phases, revealed by the XRD analysis results in Fig. 1(c).

The plane scan analysis of WC-12 powder in Fig. 1(b) was conducted, and the result is shown in Fig. 2(a). The weight fractions were as follows (wt.%): 76.35 W, 15.80 C, 7.85 Co. The corresponding atomic fractions were (at.%): 28.32 W, 65.10 C, 6.58 Co. These results demonstrate that the WC-12Co powder was composed of W, C, and Co elements. The W was uniformly distributed and appeared atom-rich zones in the powder grain, as shown in Fig. 2(b). The distribution of C in the powder grain (Fig. 2c) was consistent with that of W. The Co was uniformly distributed in the powder grain at a certain concentration (Fig. 2d).

The line scan analysis of a WC-12Co powder grain is shown in Fig. 3. According to this plot, the W maintained a high level throughout the powder, with a relatively small fluctuation, which further suggested that the W was uniformly distributed in the powder. The distribution of C in the powder was consistent with that of W. The Co exhibited a certain concentration throughout the powder, with several high peaks of Co at the central positions, indicating that the material contained a certain amount of Co.
