Smooth and dense graphene quantum dots-based lubricating coatings

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs), one new type of zero dimensional carbon-based nanomaterials, possess incredible properties and can be regarded as graphene sheets with transverse dimensions less than 100 nm. More recently, some works have demonstrated that GQDs have superior biocompatibility, low toxicity, good water solubility, and unique optical/electrical performances, and so on. Owing to these merits, GQDs have attracted extensive attention in many areas including biomedicine, photovoltaics, light-emitting diodes, and nanosensors devices. However, there are few works involved on the application of GQDs in solid lubricant field. In fact, hydrophilic groups and small size effects make GQDs highly soluble in water, avoiding the aggregation of GO in water. Therefore, it is conceivable to obtain dense GQDs coatings (GQDCs) through EPD route in a GQDs aqueous dispersion. In the present work, we attempt to utilize GQDs dispersion as the raw materials to develop a highly dense, uniform, and smooth solid lubricant coatings onto the surface of conductive silicon (Si) wafer via the EPD route. Furthermore, the structure and component of GQDCs as well as their tribological performances were investigated and discussed in detail. Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are very intriguing in various application fields of micro/nano-electrical-mechanical systems including biomedicine, photovoltaics, light-emitting diodes, and nanosensors devices due to their outstanding physical and chemical properties from quantum confinement and edge effects. Herein, GQDs were firstly synthesized, which can be well dispersed in water and the obtained dispersion shows high stability. Then, graphene quantum dots coatings (GQDCs) were deposited on silicon (Si) substrate via a simple electrophoretic deposition route by using GQDs aqueous dispersion as raw materials. As a result, the as-deposited GQDCs present very uniform, smooth and dense characters. The tribological measurements indicate that the optimum GQDCs sample shows effective reductions in friction coefficient (~85%) and wear volume (~97%) relative to those of the bare Si substrate. Based on these superior tribological performances, the deposited GQDCs are expected to be the outstanding solid lubricant coatings in Si-based devices with highly efficient lubrication and anti-wear properties.
