Study on High-temperature Properties of Ceria Stable Nano-Zirconia Thermal Barrier Coating

  Abstract:Plasma sprayed thermal barrier coatings are suitable for thermal and hot corrosion protection of metal components in land-based turbineand diesel engines. In this work, nanostructured ceria–yttria-stabilized zirconia (CYSZ)coatings and conventional zirconia–8% yttria (YSZ) coatings were deposited by atmospheric plasma spraying and they were heat-treated at 1300℃ for 10h, in order to research effect of high-temperature on properties of coating. Compared with the conventional YSZ coating, CeO2 provided a high phase stabilization for zirconia, since little phase decomposition was observed after thermal aging, and the microstructure of the nanostructured CYSZ coating did not involve the cracks, except the particles of the“nanozones” increased after heat-treated, which proved the nanostructured CYSZ coating is more stable than conventional YSZ one. Thermal cyclic oxidation experiment proved nanostructured CYSZ coating had longer thermal cycling lifetime and exhibits the promising thermal cyclic oxidation resistance.
