The Fe-based metallic glass thick coatings produced by gas tunnel type plasma spraying were investigated regarding the microstructure and the Vickers hardness as the mechanical property, and the following results were obtained.
Metallic glass coating formed on the stainless-steel substrate was of dense morphology with low porosity of 2–3% at plasma current of 200–400 A in about 200?m thickness.
The Vickers hardness of metallic glass coating was Hv50= 1000–1100, in the cross-section of all coating regions at plasma current of 300 A. This hardness was similar to that of the Fe-based metallic glass bulk material.
Vickers hardness of the coating was increased with increase in the plasma current. It corresponded to the result of the lower porosity at higher plasma current.
