Silver has been used as a solid lubricant because it exhibits good thermo-chemical stability over a wide range of temperatures and possesses low shear strength over a moderate range of temperatures. It has been used in composite coatings and other self-lubricating composites in conjunction with other solid lubricants. It has a large diffusion coefficient and due to its high mobility at elevated temperatures, diffuses out of the matrix to open surface and forms a lubricating film at the sliding interface. The high temperature tribological performance is strongly dependent on the diffusion of silver and its transfer to counterface. Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) has a lamellar structure and is being used as an effective solid lubricant for hightemperature applications. The friction coefficients from RT to 600 ℃ are reduced by adding silver in the Ni-based composite. At a particular temperature, the friction coefficient decreases with increasing amount of silver. The composites with relatively higher amounts of silver have shown lower wear rates in comparison of . The wear rates are also found to decrease with increasing temperature for all the composites.
