Abstract :The microfiltration membrane was modified with nano-sized metal oxide coating to obtain the hydrolysis surface. The nano coating distributes in the surface of the microfiltration membrane and on the wall of the permeating channels in the microfiltration membrane. The thickness of the nano-sized coating results in the decrease of the mean pore size of the modified microfiltration membrane. According to Hagen-Poiseuille equation, the permeating flux should decrease. However, the permeating flux of the modified membrane increases. To explain this phenomenon, the water permeating mechanism of the modified membrane was discussed from the point of the surface morphology of nano coating, the nano-sized effect and the hydrophilic/hydrophobic character. The requirements of this mechanism were tested by the experiments.
