Study on the Surface Coating of Welding Wire of CO2-Gas Shielding Arc-Welding

  ABSTRACT
  As a high-efficiency, energy saving, low cost welding technology,CO2-gas shielding arc welding has been widely used in various domains of welding,especially the welding under small regulation by slender solid welding wire. Short circuit transfer is the most popular way of transition of CO2-gas shielding arc welding under small regulation. However, because of the inherent property of CO2, it causes too much spatters during welding,as well as many flaws such as surplus height of seam is too great and bad appearance of weld. According to the above deficiency,developing a CO2-gas shielding arc welding with low spatters, good appearance of weld is one of a focal topic in this field.
  In this paper, surface coating welding wire was made by dealing with the surface differently,using plating, hot dipping, mechanical alloying and mechanical coating from the point of welding material. Then different quality of coat under different producing techniques was investigated by contrast experiments. At last, we found that the method of mechanical coating was most advisable. The welding spatters,appearance of weld and the metal transfer of both the surface coating welding wire and the welding wire without surface coating were studied. It can provide us a method for real manufacture.
  The innovative point of this paper lies in that the mechanical alloying methodology can make the coating powder containing the deoxidant and activated fluxes on the surface of the coat directly when the welding wire is drew, and bring to the welding area directly when we weld. So it can affect the welding metallurgy process,reduce the spatters and improve the appearance of weld.
  The dimension of the depth welding wire mark can be obtained by adjusting the stress of wheel. So we can change the surface roughness and adjust the content of coating powder. Comparing the welding experiments of different surface coating welding wire,the results are listed as follows: when welding wire whose surface coating contains the deoxidant and activator is welded under CO2-gas shielding arc welding,spatters are obviously reduced,appearance of weld is improved,surplus height of seam is reduced,the depth and breadth of welding line is increased,metal transfer frequency is increased too. It can be explained as follows: the existence of deoxidant and activated fluxes at the same time affects the welding metallurgy process,activates the arc, and changes the flow action of the melting pool.
